Moringa University began long before it had a name. Its origin traces back to a single moment in 2016, when a young father and educator in Oakland faced a crisis that would transform his life forever.
After a long day teaching at Oakland Tech, Chris10 stopped at Lake Merritt — a place where he often sat to gather his thoughts and process the weight of work, family, and the quiet fear of raising a child with Sickle Cell. That afternoon, everything shifted. His wife called: the family car had broken down in East Oakland. She was stranded with their firstborn, pregnant with their second. Chris10 had no transportation and no time to waste.
He walked to Coffee With a Beat, a small café where East African brothers gathered to maintain community ties far from home. One of them — a man named Fike — offered him a ride without hesitation. During the drive, they spoke about culture, struggle, and the systems their families were forced to navigate. Chris10 shared the challenges of Sickle Cell and the uncertainty surrounding his child’s health.
Fike reached into his pocket and handed him two Moringa seeds.
His instruction was simple:
“Learn as much as you can about this tree.”
Chris10 cracked one seed open and tasted its sharp bitterness — a raw, cleansing shock that felt like his body recognized the plant before his mind understood it. He took the second seed home and planted it.
